Inspired by his Mississippi roots, the nightclubs of New York and Paris, Josephine Baker, and celebrated couturiers Coco Chanel and Elsa Schiaparelli, Kelly infused his bold designs with a sly sense of humor, subverting not only fashion but also racial stereotypes.
